Baked Tempeh (That’s Way Better Than Bacon :)

Tempeh is the ideal vegan party food that meat eaters also love. When baked, it’s great finger food for gatherings. Baked tempeh is also easy to pack up and take as a snack for a festival or camping trip. Tempeh is great in sandwiches. Protein-rich, nutty and delicious. Marinated tempeh is also a wonderful food for a vegan Halloween party because the fermented soy beans can masquerade as boils, warts, and other gross stuff.

Consider making a big batch that you can enjoy all week or just cut this recipe in half.

40 minutes

Feeds 8 people when served with vegetable and grain dishes

  • 2 lbs pack tempe cut in 1/4 inch thick rectangles
  • 1/4 cup Apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup gluten-free soy sauce
  • 1/8 cup (2 TBs) agave or other liquid sweetener (brown rice syrup, maple syrup, etc)
  • 1/8 cup oil (grapeseed or olive oil) or water
  • 1 Tbs nutritional yeast

Double the recipe for a party

Here’s a slightly different recipe that feeds 16 people is doubled and also so delicious:

  • 1 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp sea salt
  • 4 tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp gluten-free tamari
  • ¼ cup olive oil (optional)

Artistry for both versions:

  1. Lay flat in baking pan
  2. Pour marinade on and let sit 5 min
  3. Flip pieces and let sit for 10 min so each piece is coated on both sides
  4. Bake for 20 min at 350
  5. Toss and bake for 15 more min
